Respiratory System

Unfortunately, many that drink to excess will experience nausea and vomiting. If the drinker aspirates (inhales) vomitus into the lungs, it can lead to a condition known as aspiration pneumonia. It could also lead to lung abscesses. If the intoxicated person vomits in his/her sleep, death could occur from suffocation.

Alcoholics are also at risk for an increased number of upper respiratory infections and pneumonias related to a decreased functioning of the immune system associated with alcohol overuse.

Chronic lung conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis or COPD (chronic obstruction pulmonary disease) are aggravated by the use of alcohol.
