In order to break the chain of addiction, it must be recognized that many alcohol abusers try and fail on several occasions before treatment is successful. When considering treatment modalities, one must remember that not all programs work for all people. Some type of diagnostic appraisal of the alcoholic's medical condition, patterns of use, and psychological status can be helpful in determining goals for alcoholic to regain control of not only their drinking, but also their lives. Another important factor is considering treatment is the financial resources of the alcoholic.
