Welcome to the Department of Epidemiology. Epidemiology is the basic science of Public Health. The science of epidemiology began with studying outbreaks of infectious disease. However, today epidemiologists also study chronic disease such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer, and also injury and violence. Epidemiologists investigate patterns of disease and injury among populations as well as the biological, clinical, and social risk factors and determinants of these health states.

As an epidemiology student, you will learn statistical techniques and research designs to investigate patterns of disease and their determinants, with the ultimate goal of improving the health of the public. As a graduate from our epidemiology program, you will be prepared to conduct research in academic institutions, clinical centers, public health departments at local, state, national, and international levels, or to work in private industry. Very exciting career opportunities beckon.
