Partnership Activities:

Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) established a Technical Assistance Center on the Prevention of Prescription Drug Abuse in the Workplace (the PAW TA Center). Its purpose is to help workplaces and communities throughout the U.S. reduce prescription drug abuse and related negative health outcomes by providing a variety of technical assistance and training resources. The Pacific Institute for Research and Evaluation (PIRE) maintains the PAW-TA. In doing so, PIRE conducts systematic and inclusive searches of journals, newspapers, magazines, federal websites, and other sources, to compile a weekly listserv update of current, authoritative information on prescription drug abuse. PIRE requested that WVU ICRC develop a Web-based archive for the weekly updates. WVU ICRC outreach program developed and updates the archive weekly. Fact Sheets on prescription drug abuse issues developed for SAMHSA by PIRE are also converted and added to the listserv archive.

Public Health Impact of Partnership:

The Web archive of the PAW TA listserv, which delivers the weekly SAMHSA Prescription Drug Abuse Weekly Update, represents one of the most popular, frequently accessed resources on the WVU ICRC Web. In addition to maintaining the archive, WVU ICRC outreach tracks and communicates Web traffic information back to PIRE. Since it was launched in December 2012, the Update listserv archive on the WVU ICRC Website has attracted thousands of visitors. It reached a peak in May 2014, with over 3,500 unique visitors, and 4,400 hits to all of the individual listserv weekly issues. To assist in the dissemination of the weekly updates, WVU ICRC posts and tweets the availability of each new issue through its Facebook and Twitter accounts. To further enable PIRE to track hits and visitors, WVU ICRC has requested that, in addition to the listserv issue pages, the WVU Health Sciences Center provide monthly tracking reports on each of the fact sheets posted in the archive.
