School of Public Health faculty, students, presenting at national conference

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Members of the West Virginia University School of Public Health have been selected to speak at a national conference in early November.

The American Public Health Association’s Annual Meeting & Exposition is a yearly event that brings together public health professionals from across the country. This year’s conference is being held in Chicago.

Four students are presenting posters at the annual conference. Halima Ahmadi-Montecalvo (Factors Associated with Passive Tobacco Smoke Exposure, Tobacco Use, and Other Drug Use among Foster Care Children in West Virginia), Yahya Alamir (Relationship between sleep patterns and the nonmedical use of prescription drugs among a large sample of college students), Amna Umer (Factors associated with mothers who intended to breastfeed but did not exclusively breastfeed using data from the West Virginia Birth Score Project), and Samantha Shawley (Mid-Program Evaluation of a Diabetes Prevention and Management Program in West Virginia) are all doctoral candidates in the School of Public Health.

Adam Baus, Ph.D., MA, MPH, a research assistant professor in the Department of Health Policy, Management, and Leadership, is also traveling to the annual conference. His presentation, Step one: Building local and regional level capacity for health analytics, quality of care improvement, and practice-based research, is part of a session focused on using electronic health records to improve quality of care. “This presentation focuses on empowering primary care partners to best use data for activities such as chronic disease risk identification, patient care coordination, and population health management,” Dr. Baus said.
