Application Process

The WVU School of Public Health admits undergraduate students in both fall and spring semesters. Interested students must apply and be accepted to West Virginia University.

Once you have reviewed the admission requirements, you can begin the application process below.

Note: The School of Public Health reserves the right to close admissions early in order to optimize students' academic experience.

High School Students

Direct Admissions

Direct admissions relates to students applying upon graduation from high school and those with no previous undergraduate credits. Applicants who meet the minimum standards (see below) will be accepted directly into the program by WVU Admissions.

Direct Admission Guidelines

Students are eligible for direct freshman admission if they meet these minimum guidelines:

  • 3.0 cumulative high school GPA
    OR
  • ACT of 21 (superscored) and 2.75 cumulative high school GPA
    OR
  • SAT of 990 (superscored) and 2.75 cumulative high school GPA
    OR
  • Post-March 2016 SAT: 1070 and cumulative GPA: 2.75

Note about superscores: WVU combines the highest subscores from different test dates to create a "superscore" total or composite for admissions and scholarship consideration eligibility. For more information, please visit WVU Admission Requirements and click on "Apply as a First-time Freshman."

Pre-Public Health Admissions

Students who do not meet direct admit minimum standards, but are interested in pursuing a degree in public health, may elect to be admitted into the pre-public health program, if qualified.

Students in pre-public health can take the same courses and request access to the same academic advising as majors do. However, these students will have to meet internal transfer requirements of a 2.5 college GPA within 2 semesters of entering this program or they will have to select an alternate major. 

Pre-Public Health Admission Guidelines

Students are eligible for admission into pre-public health if they meet these minimum guidelines:

  • 2.75 Cumulative High School GPA
    OR
  • ACT of 19 (superscored) and 2.5 Cumulative High School GPA
    OR
  • SAT of 910 (superscored) and 2.5 Cumulative High School GPA
    OR

Post-March 2016 SAT: 990 and Cumulative GPA: 2.50

Internal (WVU) Transfers or Change of Majors

WVU students who are undeclared or in other majors may apply to transfer into the public health program via a WVU Academic Status Update form once the students meet the transfer guidelines (see below).

  • 2.5 cumulative undergraduate GPA

External Transfer Students

External transfer students with at least 30 credit hours successfully completed at another institution of higher education are eligible for direct admission into the School of Public Health undergraduate program when meeting the minimum guidelines (see below).

External Transfer Guidelines

  • 2.5 cumulative undergraduate GPA
