Zamzee Activity Study
Start date: August 25, 2011
Funding: HopeLab Foundation, Inc.
Description: The Health Research Center is testing a new product, called Zamzee, which tracks and saves information about how physically active a person is while wearing it. The Zamzee can be used as an intervention when paired with web -based rewards for physical activity. In this intervention, the Zamzee can be plugged into people´s computers so their physical activity data can be uploaded to the Zamzee rewards website. This website allows people to earn rewards for being physically active. Types of rewards include Target gift cards, website customization and donations to favorite charities. The goal of this pilot study is to find out how effectively Zamzee can increase physical activity levels in middle school aged students who wear Zamzee over a 6 month time period. To test this, students who participate in the study will be assigned to 1 of 2 groups: one receiving access to the rewards website and a control group that will wear the Zamzee but not have website access. The physical activity of all participants in both groups will be tracked using the Zamzee activity monitor. Participants are asked to carry the Zamzee with them daily for the duration of the study (6 months).
The primary objective of this study is to determine how effectively the Zamzee reward system can impact physical activity in middle school-aged students. The secondary objective is to learn about the functionality and utilization of the Zamzee device among this age group.
