Groth to present during Afternoon of Science – NIOSH 50th Anniversary Celebration
Caroline Groth, PhD, assistant professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, will present "Coffee Worker Exposures and Health Outcomes - WVU and NIOSH Collaboration" on Wednesday, May 5, from 2-3 p.m. during Afternoon of Science – NIOSH 50th Anniversary Celebration, hosted by the Office of Research and Graduate Education.
Groth's summary of what to expect from the presentation:
"In this talk we describe a few NIOSH collaborations (including healthcare workers’ exposures to cleaning chemicals; and COVID-19 and Occupation: Facebook COVID-19 Survey) but focus primarily on a NIOSH and WVU collaboration where we aim to investigate coffee workers’ exposures to alpha-diketones and potential health outcomes in this population. Exposure to the alpha-diketone chemicals diacetyl and 2-3 pentanedione has been shown to cause a disease of small airways called obliterative bronchiolitis, which can be very severe. This NIOSH study investigated workers at 17 coffee production facilities where exposure estimates were obtained."
