Delta Omega offering virtual educational community service opportunities to advance the health of all people

In an effort to advance the health of all people, the School of Public Health’s Delta Omega, an honorary society for graduate students, is offering courses to help achieve that mission.

Delta Omega started offering virtual educational community service opportunities in the Fall of 2020 due to COVID-19 precautions. Starting in the Fall of 2020, Delta Omega set out on a mission to offer community service opportunities that were ‘COVID safe’. One of the best ways to do so was to find and promote free educational opportunities online.

“Offering these courses has not only made it safe for students to participate in community service opportunities, but it also increased student engagement far beyond what Delta Omega had experienced in the past,” Hannah Layman, PhD student in Public Health Social and Behavioral Sciences, said. “Plus, all community service courses offered by Delta Omega are free”.

Delta Omega is currently offering two events, COVID-19 Psychological First Aid and FEMA Certificate: Effective Communication.

“As a result of students completing these courses, my hope is to offer students the ability to engage in community service efforts and opportunities while being able to stay safe and healthy,” Layman said. “There are a wide variety of topics offered through the Delta Omega community service courses, but the main goal is to help educate students to not only better their health but the health of their communities”.

These opportunities are open to any WVU student. Layman said many students from other disciplines have reached out to Delta Omega and expressed their appreciation for the online opportunities since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Virtual educational opportunities are a great way to engage students with busy schedules or who may not live on campus,” Layman said. “Delta Omega plans to continue offering virtual opportunities past the time of COVID-19."
