"Syed was a trained clinician from Bangladesh. He worked on prevention of diarrheal diseases in children. He received an MPH from University of Syndey Australia and a [doctorate] in epidemiology in the US [...] His work at WVU related mostly to detection and prevention of work-related illness, and many of his publications are commonly cited. Syed left WVU to work on consumer epidemiology (also called postmarketing surveillance) in the pharmaceutical industry. He took jobs with progressively greater responsibility and traveled all over the world in consumer protection. At the time of his death, he was the senior director of Benefit Risk Management and Epidemiology at Jazz Pharmaceuticals.

A personal note: Syed was a kind, generous, and gentle person. He and his wife Jan were always hospitable to faculty and students. Syed is survived by his wife Jan and his children Aras, Ahmed, and Farah."

An obituary was not made available. According to information from Dr. Ducatman, Syed died at his home in suburban Chicago.
