Weekly Research Updates and Opportunities: July 5, 2018

Below are this week’s research announcements, awards and opportunities from the School of Public Health Offices of Research and Development.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

Direct Sponsor Submission of IRB Protocols is Not Allowable at WVU -   It has come to light that sponsors are submitting protocols on WVU’s behalf directly to commercial (Central) IRBs. While WVU IRB understands this process accelerates approvals and reduces site submission workloads, going forward any direct sponsor submissions must stop as this process is not approved by WVU IRB. For anyone utilizing direct sponsor submissions, this news is understandably disappointing. However, until a well-defined process is in place that ensures human subjects, investigators, and all of WVU are properly protected the risks associated with direct sponsor submissions eclipse any benefits. Our office is reaching out to other institutions that use this process to evaluate its use. Once our evaluation is complete, a determination will be made regarding any future changes concerning the acceptance of direct sponsor submissions. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact WVU IRB office at 304.293.7555.

Helpful Information to Submit a grant at the WVU HSC – The HSC Office of Research and Graduate Education has developed some new guidance for HSC researchers. Please refer to these documents and let the SPH Office of Research know if you have any questions.

Please keep in mind the SPH has additional internal review deadlines as outlined in the Research SOG 003 – Sponsored Program Proposal Submission which can be found on Sharepoint.

HSC Researchers: do you need research assistance? WVU SOM Surgery Interest Group has medical students looking for research opportunities - The Surgery Interest Group is one of the largest medical student organizations at the WVU School of Medicine. Many SIG members are interested in competitive surgical specialties and are hungry for research experiences. In a world of increasingly competitive residency applications, research experience with publication makes for a lucrative applicant. One barrier for medical students is discovering projects with dedicated mentors who have a goal of publication. SIG is searching for PIs who are in need of motivated medical students to assist with research. If you are interested in the possibility of a student contacting you in the Fall about projects you may need assistance with, please fill out this quick google form.

Procurement Process Changes due to Uniform Guidance (effective July 1, 2018) - PCPS has updated its website to include information on procurement process changes due to Uniform Guidance. To review the guidelines impacting research administration, visit here. Cost Transfers will not be allowable on sponsored awards if the applicable sponsored procurement regulations were not applied to the original purchase through PCPS. As an example, if a non-catalog purchase was processed on state non-sponsored funds for $20,000 and the department requests to transfer this expenditure to a sponsored award, the department would need to provide the evidence of competition or sole source document that was prepared at the time of the original purchase as an attachment to the Cost Transfer documentation.
