WVU In the News: Study finds elderly near fracking sites at higher risk of dying prematurely

A new study has found that elderly Americans had a higher risk of dying prematurely if they live near or downwind of fracking sites. The authors looked at Medicare records for 15 million Americans between 2001 and 2015, and compared them to records of 2.5 million oil and gas wells.

"There is something related to fracking 'to be suspicious about,'" said Michael McCawley, associate professor in occupational and environmental health at West Virginia University.
