Master of Health Administration students recognized as L.E.A.D. scholars

West Virginia University School of Public Health graduate students Kailie Clark and Trey Harvey have been selected as the 2021-2022 L.E.A.D. scholars.

The L.E.A.D. Scholarship recognizes students in the Master of Health Administration program who “will serve as champions for equitable, diverse and inclusive healthcare, redefining 21st century healthcare leadership and administration.”

“We are thrilled to award Kailie and Trey for this new scholarship, the focus of which is on supporting future change agent healthcare leaders,” said Erik Carlton, DrPH, associate dean for professional programs and director of the MHA program. “They were both selected for their commitment to social justice and the social determinants of health, as well as a sensitivity to the vulnerable experiences in the treatment and care of those in healthcare settings.”

Thanks to the support of a local healthcare executive, the L.E.A.D. Scholarship was established and shaped by the core values of the MHA program, which are: Learning; Engagement; Achievement; and Diversity.

Both Clark and Harvey received their undergraduate degrees from the School of Public Health, each graduating with a B.S. in Public Health in 2021.

“As I continue my education at West Virginia University, this award will pose as a reminder of the aspirations I have for becoming a leader in the healthcare industry,” Harvey said. “I will embrace my lived experiences through serving others for a more equitable and inclusive healthcare system.”

Clark appreciates the affirmation the award provides.

“Being an MHA L.E.A.D. Scholarship recipient is an honor,” Clark said. “Putting the hard work into my studies and seeing it pay off is reassurance that I can succeed on my future career path.”

The L.E.A.D. Scholarship is one of many opportunities the School of Public Health provides to its students. As a member of AUPHA, the School offers additional exclusive resources for students and faculty.

“These awards were made possible by the vision and generosity of a local healthcare leader who recognized an opportunity to award those committed to a better future for all. We are incredibly grateful for that generosity and know the impact it will have through Kailie and Trey,” Carlton said.

Clark and Harvey will each receive their $500 L.E.A.D Scholarship award in the 2022-23 academic year.
