CBD and Driving Performance Clinical Trial - now recruiting!

We are actively recruiting for this study!  This study examines whether cannabidiol (CBD) impacts cognition, psychomotor function, and driving performance in healthy young adults.  We are also investigating whether there are differences between men and women and whether there are differences by dose of CBD.  Here is what will happen if you participate:

  • Participants will arrive in the morning and be screened for eligibility, complete the consent process, complete a urine drug screen and pregnancy test (if applicable), and take a 10-minute test drive on the driving simulator to ensure the absence of simulation sickness (i.e. motion sickness).
  • After successful completion of the activities described above, participants will take an electronic survey followed by 11 short cognitive/psychomotor tests.  
  • The participant will then be randomized to receive placebo, 150 mg, or 300 mg of CBD oil.  Participants will be provided with breakfast and will hang out in the lab for 2 hours.
  • The participant will then complete a ~40-minute driving session and then re-take the 11 cognitive/psychomotor tests
  • The participant will take a short exit survey and be provided with $100 VISA gift card

The entire procedure takes ~5 hours and is fun!

To participate, individuals must meet the following criteria:

  • Be 18-30 years of age
  • Have a drivers’ license from any state in the United States
  • Driven a motor vehicle at least once in the past 30 days
  • Able to read English
  • Not currently taking any daily prescription medications (excluding birth control)
  • Not diagnosed with any chronic disease by a licensed healthcare provider (including Alzheimer’s and related dementias, Parkinson’s disease or other neurodegenerative disorder, major depressive or anxiety disorder, schizophrenia or other serious mental illness, arrhythmias, cataracts, glaucoma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, diabetes, epilepsy, sleep apnea, liver disease, or fibromyalgia)
  • Not currently smoking or vaping
  • No cannabidiol use, nicotine/tobacco use, or illicit drug use in the past 30 days
  • Not currently pregnant or lactating
  • Has a person willing to drive them home or be willing to take a rideshare service home after testing
